Can’t we work to find a real solution to mass shootings?

Last year was the deadliest year for mass shootings in recent U.S. history, with 345 incidents recorded by Gun Violence Archive. As of today, there have been 34 mass shootings this year, five of them on school grounds during school hours – 55 days into the year! Clearly, something is wrong.

If we want to change this, we need to address the issue head-on, to find non-partisan, evidence-based solutions that will reduce the number of mass shootings in this country. Our national lawmakers continually refuse to appoint a special commission to investigate, or to change the law so the CDC can study this as a public health issue. So instead, how do we get this done?

Is our state ready to take the next step? Perhaps we ask: Governor Kasich, will you appoint a special committee to study solutions for combatting gun violence? What about our senators, representatives, or gubernatorial candidates? Will any of you support this?

We may all be very surprised by what we find – but the challenge is to let go of our beliefs and look at non-partisan, verifiable data, and then be willing to implement what that data tells us – for the good of all of us, for society as a whole, even if these solutions are not what we prefer.

I will be contacting our Ohio representatives to ask them to create a task force to ferret out the reasons for our gun problem. I hope you will, too. Below is a sample email or script you can use or adapt as you like.

Thank you for supporting our children and our society.

Dear ___,
I am asking for your support in creating an independent commission to research our country’s gun violence problem and its solutions. Since our elected officials in Washington, D.C. are refusing to do so, I am asking you as a representative of the Great State of Ohio to take on this important task to protect our citizens – our children – from what has become a broad societal problem. With 2017 deemed the deadliest year for mass shootings in recent U.S. history, and early 2018 not far behind, I want to see this trend stopped and reversed, for the betterment of all.

I am not advocating for any specific solution. Instead, I am asking you to create a forum to evaluate scientific information that can shed light on the causes of the problem, and determine best practices among other countries where this issue does not exist. We know “best practices” is a highly successful way to improve operations in all industries – why not with this serious and deadly issue?

Non-partisan, verifiable data should help make next steps for solving this issue clear. Please, let Ohio lead the way in solving the ever-growing problem of gun violence.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
________

Gun violence? I didn’t know a gun could commit violence. Now a person can use a gun to commit violence. But that person is always left out of every gun argument. The lefties never blame them. Nor do they take any action to stop them. Almost every Muslim terrorist that used guns to kill Americans was well known by the FBI and other agencies to be just that, a terrorist. Nothing was done to stop them or track their movements. Nothing. Seriously disturbed individuals who killed were well known to others around them to be dangerous and armed. Nothing was done. Absolutely nothing. The latest incident is a perfect example of deliberate neglect of duty by the Broward county police, the FBI, and the school board. They can brush it off as a simple mistake with no consequences whatsoever. And nobody says a word about that. The only outrage is about a gun and the NRA. That’s it. Your so-called source, Gun Violence Archive, is well known as a radical anti-gun group with the single objective of an absolute gun ban. They go on and on about all the shootings to stack up big numbers against guns and absolve the perpetrators. It’s a poor source for objective information. Almost all shootings in America are committed by repeat felons, gang members, and drug dealers. And yet sentences for these crimes are minimal if any at all in order to keep our incarceration rate down. So the media, the judges, and politicians ignore it. You call for a non-partisan government address of the issue. There is no such thing. It will never happen. The government doesn’t solve problems it creates and uses them for political advantage. If you want to help solve the problem. Look at who’s doing the shooting and go from there.
