Here are the highlights from the July 19, 2018 school board meeting:

  • The Milford school district takes the safety of our students and staff very seriously. A Safety Task Force was convened several months ago to study options for increasing safety procedures throughout the district. Based on their recommendation, beginning this school year, teachers will now be required to keep their doors locked at all times except during class changes. This change comes specifically from the Milford and Miami Township Police who are participating on this committee. There is a great deal of research that indicates a locked door is a large deterrent in a school shooting situation. From the regulation: “When classroom doors are closed and locked, our staff and students are already in a fairly secure environment. Studies of past school shootings show that active shooters have rarely done harm to staff and students in classrooms that are closed and locked. We will continue to teach enhanced barricading, but by keeping classroom doors closed and locked, we help to keep all safe and secure, not just those who have time to react to a threat.”
