Operations in the Milford EVSD continue along a strong and steady path – thanks to our administrators, who have directed us toward continuous improvement in both educational results and fiscal management, we have now had years headed in the right direction. I was unable to attend the last school board meeting, so I do not have my own update. Thankfully, the meeting did not cover any big or new issues; here is our Communication Consultant Meg Krsacok’s summary of the meeting, which will give you a great idea of what happened.

Extracurricular Update 5/10/18

Notable singers will have a recording session on Friday, May 11th for their next Spotify/iTunes album. We are the only school in this area doing this!

Extracurricular Update 3/15/18

Milford Drama’s final production of the season is “Little Women,” an adaptation of the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott. The play will run April 12, 13, and 14.

On March 18th, the Chamber Singers will be part of the “Sing for a Cause” concert, a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, along with students from Walnut Hills and Taylor High Schools.  All proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Varsity Winter Guard won the open class at the Nashville Regional, and the Winter Drumline placed 2nd at the Kettering competition.

The high school Key Club will be hosting Trivia Night for a Cure event this Friday, March 16th at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria.  All proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Rehearsals continue for Milford Drama’s next production, the musical “Curtains!”  The show will run in February and feature the biggest cast ever – 44 students!

Milford Drama’s Fall play was a success!  Rehearsals have already started for the next production, the musical “Curtains!”  The show will run in February and feature the biggest cast ever – 44 students!

It has been a busy holiday season for Milford Choirs.  Emma Lawrence traveled to Orlando as the first Milford student to participate in the NAfME All-National Choir.  The Music Department now offers after-school private piano lessons in addition to private voice lessons.

Extracurricular Update 10/19/17

Milford Drama presents their “Exhibit This! The Museum Comedies” next month.  This Fall play is a fast-paced series of vignettes and monologues based on 50+ exhibits at the museum in NYC.  The play will be performed November 17th through November 19th, and tickets are available at the door or online.

On October 21st the Concert Choir will be participating in the 2nd annual Choral Collision at Walnut Hills, along with 7 other high schools in Hamilton and Clermont counties.  Mrs. Carpenter is one of the central organizers and creators of the event.  Notable will be performing at the New Taipei Welcome Dinner on October 23rd, and they will also be performing at the National A Cappella Festival at Kettering High School November 10th and 11th. Their performance at Milford will be on November 15th at 7 PM in the auditorium.

The Marching Band competed at the Bands of America 2017 Regional Championship at the University of Dayton on October 7th finishing 13th overall. In the next month, Marching Band will head to both the Midstates Band Competition at Colerain High School on Saturday, October 28th, and the Bands of America Grand Nationals November 10th and 11th in Indianapolis.

Extracurricular Update 9/21/17

This year’s 4th Annual “Donation Day” was a success, raising around $10,000 to help support the Band and Choral Boosters. This money goes to help the band and choral programs offer great opportunities for these students.

The Marching Band competed well at the Festival of Bands at Beechwood High School on Saturday, September 9th, and will head to compete at Ryle High School this Saturday, September 23rd.  The show this year is titled “A Hero’s Journey.”

Milford Key Club will be hosting “Trivia Night for a Cure” on Friday, September 29th in the High School Cafeteria.    All proceeds will go to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

HOMECOMING

Homecoming activities will be held the week of October 9th and include the parade and football game at Eagle Stadium on Friday, October 13th and Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 14th.

Extracurricular Update 8/17/17

The Milford High School Choir Chamber Singers have been invited to sing with Taylor and Walnut Hills Schools in Sing for a Cause on March 18th! This is a fundraiser concert for the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, where all proceeds from the concert will go to the ADA.

Emma Lawrence has been selected to perform with the National Association for Music Educators All-National Honor Choir in Orlando in November! She is the first Milford High School student to ever be selected for this prestigious ensemble. Congratulations, Emma!

In July and August, four Milford students were chosen to serve the state by singing at the Ohio State Fair as part of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir. They spent three weeks at the fair learning a large set of music which they performed 6-8 times each day of the fair. Congratulations: Micah Brownfield, Emma Horman, Gabby Lytle and Logan Miller.

Extracurricular Update 5/18/17

Choir:  The Chamber Singers earned a Superior Rating at the OMEA State Competition.  Mixed Choir, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers performed May 10th at their Spring Concert, and Zach Van Camp and Jenna Breuer were awarded National Choral Awards at the Choir Awards Ceremony on May 12th.  On May 17th the Notable & Chamber Singers toured the 5th graders in all the elementary schools to recruit for the new 6th grade choirs that start next year.

Milford HS Drama Club’s first-ever Shakespeare play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” was a huge success with over 660 people attending the production!

The next update will come when school is back in session.

Extracurricular Update 4/20/17

Milford’s Winter Guard placed 8th at the WGI Color Guard World Championships!  A huge accomplishment and followed their 1st place finish in the Scholastic Open Class at the Bowling Green Regionals.  Also, the Winter Drumline earned 2nd place at the MEPA Championships!

Student Council recently held the first-ever Special Needs Prom.  Several students from Milford and other schools attended, and several Milford students were there to support them.  The Prom was a success and student council hopes to make this an annual event.  Student Council inductions will be held this month, and the council is preparing for Teacher and Staff appreciation week.

Milford Drama will present ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ May 4th through May 6th.

Extracurricular Update 3/16/17

The Milford Concert Choir and Chamber Singers performed in the Ohio Music Educators Association Large Group Adjudicated Event and both groups received superior ratings.  The Chamber Singers advanced to the State level of competition in April.  Sophia Mailloux, Isabelle Rowe, and Maddie Stewart performed in the MTNA solo competition and all won gold or silver medals.

The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensembles earned superior ratings at the district contest, while the Concert Band earned an excellent rating.

Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Winter Guard won 1st place in Scholastic Regional competition earlier this month, while the Winter Drumline took 3rd place in February at the International Dayton Regional. Milford hosts their annual home Winter Guard and Drumline Competition this weekend at MHS!

Extracurricular Update 2/16/17

In January, several Band and Choral students performed solos at the annual OMEA District 14 Solo and Ensemble Event, all receiving excellent and superior ratings. The Chamber Singers performed in the highest ensemble class and received the highest rating.

The Milford HS Winter Drumline placed first at last month’s Mid-East Performance Association’s competition with a score of 72.65. The Drumline will be competing at the Winter Guard International Dayton Regional this Saturday.

Milford Drama will present “Songs for a New World” March 2 nd through 5 th at the High School Auditorium!

Extracurricular Update 1/12/17

Milford Drama has their Student Cabaret/Senior Night on Wednesday, February 1 at 7 pm. They will also be hosting a Drama Workshop for students in grades 6 through 8 on Saturday, February 4.

The Winter Drum Line will compete at Miamisburg High School on Sunday, January 29.

Select Band members will attend the Solo and Ensemble Competition at Elder High School on January 28.

Many of our sports and activities continue offseason workouts with our strength/conditioning partner Ignition! The Eagles are getting stronger every day!

Extracurricular Update 12/15/16

Key Club is hosting a Parent’s Night Out event tomorrow, Friday December 16th.  Parents can drop off their children at Milford High School for an evening of Christmas movies and activities, and all proceeds will benefit the local Mary Miller Foundation.

Milford’s Mixed Choir, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers performed their Winter Concert in November.  The music program plans to schedule a recruiting concert for the new elementary school choirs next year.

24 Milford High School Students were selected for the District 14 Honor Band.  The Winter Band Concert was held this month, which was fantastic, and the pep bands continue to impress at home basketball games!

 

Extracurricular Update 11/17/16

Student Council will be providing meals for teacher conferences this month, and is collecting money for Hurricane Matthew victims this week.  A Blood Drive is scheduled December 6th for MHS students.  Teachers and staff are also welcome to participate.

Milford Drama presented their first play of the year, the musical ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ in early November.  The show was outstanding!

Last week Notable, Milford’s contemporary A Cappella Choir, presented a full concert to raise funds for travel, equipment and music purchases.   They also performed for the New Taipei goodbye dinner, and then headed to the National A Cappella Festival in Kettering, OH.

The Marching Band recently competed at the BOA Regional competition in Indianapolis, and they leave tomorrow after school to perform at Disney.

Extracurricular Update 10/20/16

Milford Drama will perform “One Man, Two Guvnors” November 3-5 at Milford High School.

The Marching Band recently competed at Mason HS performing their show “Music from the Quill” using a compilation of musical compositions from Shakespeare. They will travel to the Indianapolis BOA Regional Competition during weekend of November 5.

Extracurricular Update 9/15/16

Three students from the Band program have been recognized to be in the Ohio Music Educators Association All-State Band:  Sarah Wingo on Clarinet, Bethany Fernandez on the Euphonium and Chloe Elleman who was chosen as an alternate for Flute.

The Marching Band will be competing for the first time this season at Ryle High School on September 24th!

Emma Lawrence from the Milford Choir has been selected to participate in the elite OMEA All-State Choir in Cleveland.  The Milford High School Talent Show on September 21st will allow over 30 students to showcase their various skills.

HOMECOMING

MHS Homecoming activities will be held the week of September 26th and will include a pep rally at the Milford Skyline on Thursday the 29th and the football game at Eagle Stadium on Friday the 30th!

 

Extracurricular Update 8/18/16

Marching Band/Guard competes for the first time at Ryle HS on Saturday September 24th performing “Music from the Quill” using a compilation of musical compositions from Shakespeare.

Milford High School Choirs have been invited to join the University of Cincinnati and College Conservatory of Music Wind Ensemble in their patriotic concert on September 13th by singing the Star-Spangled Banner and The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

As the school year gets rolling, we look forward to updating everyone on our many outstanding athletics and activities! Come out and support our students this fall!!

Drumline is sponsoring a Car Show this Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm in the MHS Main Parking Lot! Come out to see some super cars and support the Drumline.

Extracurricular Update 5/19/16

Choir:  On April 19th, Show Choir, Notable and Intensity performed their Pay-It-Forward Concert, collecting children’s books to donate to local preschools. The Show Choir and Notable performed for the Primetimers luncheon at Milford First United Methodist Church on April 26th. Mixed Choir, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers performed May 4th at their Spring Concert to rave reviews by the audience.  On May 7th, Chamber Singers and Notable represented the MHS Choral Department at the MEVSD Fine Arts Fair.

Milford HS Drama Club has released their 2016-17 schedule!  Be sure to clear your calendar for “One Man, Two Guvnors” Nov. 3-5, “Songs for a New World” March 2-5 and “Midsummer Night’s Dream” May 4-6.

Extracurricular Update 4/21/16

Congratulations to Varsity and JV Winter Guard for winning at the State Championship competition!  Milford was the only school to have more than one team win a gold medal and both teams were undefeated.  Varsity Winter Guard also advanced to the finals at the Winter Guard International World Championships!  They competed with 120 other high schools from 28 states through three rounds of competition. Milford was the only school from Ohio that advanced to the final round.

Key Club participated in National Pancake Day on March 8th by partnering with Milford IHOP and Children’s Miracle Network to help raise funds for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Choir:  The Milford High School a cappella group, Notable, performed at UC-Clermont on April 5 and the Boyd E. Smith Community Celebration on April 7. Both had rave reviews!  In addition, the Milford High School Chamber Singers performed at The Main Event on April 17th.  On April 30th, the Chamber Singers will be the first Milford ensemble to compete at the state level in OMEA competition.

Milford HS Drama Club will present its last play of the season “Almost, Maine”.  The play runs April 29th and 30th at 7:30PM and May 1 at 2:30PM in the MHS Auditorium.  Tickets are $6 students, $8 adults and available online or at the door.

Extracurricular Update 3/17/16

The Varsity Winter Guard and the Winter Drum Line both advanced to the finals at the WGI regional competition held in Indianapolis and Dayton. Both groups will be competing at the national competition held in April.

Band:  The Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble had their OMEA District 14 Assessment at Harrison HS on March 4th.  All three bands received an overall superior (1) rating, with the wind ensemble receiving a superior rating from all 4 judges, one of only two bands to do so.

Choir:  The MHS Concert Choir (Class B) and Chamber Singers (Class AA) both received Superior ratings at this year’s OMEA District Adjudicated Event in their prepared performance as well as their sight singing.

The MHS A Cappella Choir, Notable, will be performing at the UC Clermont Fundraiser Event on April 5th at 5:30 PM at the Eastgate Holiday Inn and then again at the Boyd E. Smith Open House on April 7th.

Drama Club:  The MHS Musical “Once on This Island” was held March 10-13 and was a huge success with attendance totaling 1,153 tickets sold.

Milford Junior High is performing School House Rock, Jr. on March 18 and 19 at 7 pm. Pattison Elementary presents the Sixth Grade Musical “Little Mermaid, Jr.” on March 18 @ 9:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 6:30 PM and March 19 @ 6:30 PM.  Everyone is invited – Admission is FREE!!!

Extracurricular Update 2/18/16

Best wishes to the undefeated varsity Winter Guard as they head to the Winter Guard International competition in Indianapolis this weekend.  The Winter Guard is currently ranked 5th in the nation.  Milford will be holding their annual winter guard and drumline competition on Saturday, February 27th.  60 schools from Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana will be attending the competition held at MHS.

Drama Club will present Once on This Island on March 10, 11, 12 at 7:30 pm and March 13 at 2:30 pm! This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, garnered eight TONY nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. Don’t miss it!

Band had 68 students perform at the District 14 solo and ensemble event held recently at Elder HS. Also, senior Kelsey Brown had an article published in the national publication “Halftime” magazine. Finally, at the Mid East WGI Regional, the Winter Drumline placed 5th out of 12 teams in the finals competition!

 

Extracurricular Update 1/21/16

The Academic Team currently sits in second place in the ECC and will face first-place Walnut Hills on Wednesday, January 27th in the MHS Media Center at 4:00 pm.

The MHS Choirs will host Choralpalooza this Saturday at 7 PM in the MHS Auditorium.  The Choral department is sending 13 entries to the OMEA District 14 Solo & Ensemble Competition.  Congratulations to Jake Balzer who advanced to the semi-finals of the Overture Awards, sponsored by the Cincinnati Arts Association.

Drama Club will be presenting their Student Cabaret Thursday on January 28 in the MHS cafeteria at 7 PM.  For $5 you will receive dessert and a great variety show featuring many talented MHS students!

Extracurricular Update 12/17/15

The Academic Team remains undefeated and holds the top spot in the ECC standings with a perfect 4-0 record!

The MHS Choir had a busy month performing at their Winter Concert, Breakfast With Santa, Primetimers Luncheon, and the Janzebar Christmas Party.  In January four students will perform in the vocal music category at the Overtures competition, sponsored by the Cincinnati Arts Association.

32 members of the MHS Band have been selected to perform in the OMEA district 14 honor band.  32 participants are the most students from any school in Hamilton and Clermont counties.

Mark your calendars now – the MHS Drama Club will be presenting the Student Cabaret Thurs., Jan 28, 2016, in the MHS cafeteria at 7PM.  For $5 you receive dessert, coffee/tea/water, and a great variety show featuring many talented MHS students!

Extracurricular Update 11/19/15

Academic Team, Basketball, Bowling, Chess, Swimming/Diving, Cheer, Dance, Winter Guard, Winter Drumline and Wrestling/Pinnettes all begin winter practices and competitions over the next few weeks!  Come on out and support our outstanding teams and clubs!!

Academic Team begins competition on Wednesday December 2nd vs Anderson at 4 pm in MHS Media Center.

Congratulations to the Milford High School Marching Band for advancing to the semi-finals of the Bands of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis! The Eagles finished in the Top 30 out of 95 bands and received the highest Div. 1 rating. This is the first time in school history that Milford has advanced to the semi’s 2 years in a row!

 

Extracurricular Update 10/15/15

Marching band will compete in the Mason High School Band Competition on Saturday, October 17th @ 9:00 PM.  They will be performing their 2015 show “The Oracle”.

Drama Club will present their fall play “Acts of God” on Nov 5th, 6th and 7th in the MHS Auditorium. 7:30 pm showtime.

As fall sports and activities wind down, winter teams are getting ready to go!

As a Milford school board member for the past 6 years, president for the past 2 years, Finance Committee member for 5 years, member of the Business Advisory Council for 2 years and active community member/volunteer currently and prior to being elected to the BOE, I have an extremely good working knowledge of our school district’s operations and costs.

The following is a rough evaluation, based on facts and reasonable assumptions, to show the financial impact Don Lykins’ priorities (taken from his campaign website, mymilfordschools.com) would have on the district. The first section outlines the additional cost of each to the district; below that is a description of each. Note: none of these ideas has been proven to increase academic performance; even when research is available, there is significant conflicting information. Continue reading
